I decided to get involved with Cavernoma Alliance following contact with one of my work colleagues. She said that she had Cavernoma, and I had never heard of it before. I had already planned to run the Silverstone half-marathon in March, so decided that this would be a good cause, as my sponsorship would raise awareness among my friends and colleagues.

After months of training, Sunday 15th March finally arrived! I had support in the form of my daughter, who is a massive Formula 1 fan, and who wasn’t going to pass on the chance to visit the circuit! After getting stuck in traffic heading to the village, we arrived about half-an-hour before the start of the race. This gave enough time to leave my bag in the left luggage area and head to the start.

The atmosphere was fantastic, with everyone supporting everyone else. It took me eight minutes, once the race started, to get to the start line as there were over 6000 runners! After a few minutes I found one of my friends and we ran together for a while. In addition to the “normal” runners, there were also elite runners and wheelchair athletes, including the legendary David Weir! It was a privilege to be overtaken by him, although he was on his third lap of the course while I was on my second! The first lap was on the racetrack in the same direction as the cars race, the second was inside the circuit(including through the pit lane) and around the perimeter of the venue, and the third was back on the track, but in the opposite direction. The second lap was very long and seemed never-ending, but I kept going. Eventually I was back on the track for the final lap, and then the finish line was in sight! It was an exhilarating experience when I crossed the line to complete my first half-marathon in a time of 2 hours 50 minutes and 40 seconds!! It might not have been quick(there were only about 150 people behind me), but I am proud of the fact that I ran every step of the way and finished the race.

After that it was time to pick up my finisher’s pack and collect my belongings from the left luggage, and stagger back to my car for the drive home.
