THE CAVERFAMILIES MANCHESTER STUDY DAY ON CAVERNOMA
CAUK had a fantastic day on Saturday 14 March in partnership with the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. Thanks to the generosity of the Big Lottery, CAUK was able to accommodate 15 families at the Travelodge, Upper Brook Street, Manchester providing them with dinner and breakfast. Then the CaverFamilies either drove or followed the owls in a 10-minute walk to the Nowgen Centre of the Manchester Hospital. The children were greeted by ‘Uncle Chris’, who entertained them in the Exhibition Room in the morning and then by ‘Rachel Looney Ballooney’ for the afternoon.
The parents listened to five clinicians from the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. The programme was organised by Dr Grace Vassallo, a consultant paediatric neurologist, who gave an introductory talk on the ‘The Cavernoma Family Journey’.
Dr Vassallo then introduced her four colleagues, Mr Ian Kamaly, a consultant paediatric neurosurgeon, Dr Elizabeth Jones, a consultant clinical geneticist and two consultant neuroradiologists, Dr. Stavros Stivaros and Dr. Amit Herwadkar, each of whom gave short talks and then discussed any issues with the parents both collectively and individually.
The children had lunch provided by the Nowgen Centre with everyone before being entertained for the afternoon entertainment by ‘Rachel Looney Ballooney’.
